Edgar L Crane was the 18^th circuit clerk of Sangamon County and held office for 8 years, his term cut short by his enlisting in the United States Army in 1942. Crane was an active and devoted Republican in Springfield and Sangamon County.  Crane was the first elected official in Sangamon County to enter into the armed forces.

Previous to his time as Circuit Clerk, Crane was well-known in eastern Sangamon County in successful banking and business circles. While Circuit Clerk, Crane was included in a trio of Republican officials counting Hugh Sponsler, a Republican committeeman from the Eleventh Precinct, and George T Robinson, a committeeman in the forty-fourth precinct.

Crane was also a proprietor for Motor Mart in 1940, along with Paul Weidenbacher and James Dunbar. Previous to the opening of this car dealership, the three men operated a used car business together.  His leaving of the position of Circuit Clerk was commemorated with a farewell dinner where fellow office-holders, republicans, and justices delivered brief parting addresses.
